What goes in the black bin

(household waste bin)

Before throwing anything away in your black bin please check if it can be recycled in your blue-lidded bin, green-lidded bin or brown bin.

 

Please don't use this bin for your food waste, this should go into your brown outdoor food bin.  

 

Black-lidded bins are for general non-recyclable waste.


Typical items that might go in your black bin:

  • Polystyrene

  • Scrunchable / soft plastics (e.g. crisps, sweet wrappers and carriers bags)

  • Wrapping paper containing foil, plastic or glitter

  • Padded envelopes - Jiffy bags

Non-recyclable card

  • Greeting cards with foil or glitter decoration

Non-recyclable glass

  • Glass cookware

  • Drinking glasses

  • Vases

  • Light bulbs and fluoroscent tubes

Non-recyclable metal packaging

  • Crisp and sweet packets or wrappers

  • General kitchen ware

    • e.g. cutlery, pots & pans

  • Laminated plastic food/drink pouches

    • e.g. baby food pouches, cat food pouches or coffee pouches

Non-recyclable plastics

  • Plastic bags

    • e.g. carrier bags, compostable bags, bread, salad, fruit/veg bags, or frozen food bags

  • Crisp and sweet packets or wrappers

  • Film lids from the pots or trays

  • Laminated plastic food/drink pouches

  • Rigid plastics

    • e.g. toys and hangers

  • Medicine pill packets
